Dresser & Chest Safety FAQsUpdated 11 days ago

We take safety seriously at Walker Edison, especially when it comes to furniture that’s used in family homes. Below you'll find answers to commonly asked questions about the safety features and design decisions behind our dressers and chests.

Are your dressers and chests safe to use?

Yes! All Walker Edison dressers and chests are designed in the U.S. and built to meet or exceed STURDY Act safety standards—federal legislation focused on preventing furniture tip-overs.

Each unit also includes a wall anchor kit to help secure it to your wall for additional safety. We strongly recommend using the provided wall anchor in your home.

Why are the drawers smaller or don’t pull out all the way?

Great question! While the drawers may seem shallow or limited in how far they pull out, this is an intentional safety feature.

Fully extended drawers increase the risk of the furniture tipping over. To help prevent this, our drawers are designed to extend only as far as allowed by current safety standards. This helps keep the dresser’s center of gravity stable—especially important for homes with children or pets.

Other dressers I’ve owned had bigger drawers. Why doesn’t yours?

You might be comparing it to furniture purchased before September 2023, when updated federal safety standards (STURDY Act) took effect. Those new guidelines limit drawer size and extension to reduce tip-over risk.

Some other brands—especially those selling on large online marketplaces—may still offer older, non-compliant models. At Walker Edison, we follow up-to-date U.S. safety requirements to keep you and your family safe.

Why can’t I open more than one drawer at a time? (Paris & similar models)

Some of our dressers, including the Paris collection, feature an interlock safety mechanism. This system allows only one drawer to open at a time, which prevents the unit from becoming front-heavy and tipping over.

While it may seem limiting, this feature is designed specifically to protect children and pets from injury.

None of the drawers will open — what should I do? (Paris & similar models)

If all drawers seem to be stuck, the interlock mechanism may be engaged.

Try the following steps:

  1. Gently press all drawers closed to ensure they are fully shut.

  2. Once they’re fully closed, try opening just one drawer again.

This typically resets the interlock system. If it continues to jam:

  • Double-check the assembly against your instruction manual to ensure all components are properly installed.
